What is it about?

MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) is the best known and most popular programme designed to promote inner peace and balance by means of mindfulness training.

Research studies have repeatedly proven that as early as after eight weeks of practicing mindfulness our nervous system shows demonstrable changes that facilitate healthy responses to stressors and, in this way, increase our mental as well as physical health.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness may be defined as an "awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally" (Jon Kabat-Zinn, 1990/2013).

MBSR

What will we learn?

In this course, we will learn skills that help us to develop effective ways of responding positively and proactively to stressful experiences in our lives.

We will learn to:

  • distinguish between the automatic “doing” mode of our mind and the “being” (awareness) mode, and to switch between them depending on what the situation requires
  • observe how our mind spontaneously interprets every experience in our lives and how this interpretation affects our reactions
  • develop the attitudes of gentle curiosity, openness and kindness to all aspects of our inner experience – sense perceptions, thoughts, feelings and physical sensations
  • become aware of our habitual thinking and emotional patterns and reactivity, and how they influence our health and life satisfaction
  • create room for replacing our autopilot reactions with conscious responses
  • allow ourselves to experience emotions without being overwhelmed by them and without identifying with them
  • recognize which activities nurture us and which deplete our inner resources, and keep them in balance
  • enhance our generosit and kindness towards other people

How will you benefit?

The skills learned through practicing mindfulness will allow you to:

  • experience a solid sense of peace and freedom resulting from the ability to choose how you respond to life situation
  • recover faster from the demanding, stressful situations that life inevitably brings
  • perceive the joy of being present in your life and savour the richness of each of its moments
  • be "your own best friend" and to motivate yourself in a healthy manner
  • enjoy heartfelt connection in your relationships with other people

Further information

The MBSR eight-week course aims to provide the participants with the tools and motivation to develop mindful presence over the course of their lives.
The course is designed for those who are serious about their self-development in order to improve their health, resilience, relationships and overall wellbeing.
The course consists of 8 sessions of 2.5 - 3 hours held in weekly intervals. A four-hour silent practice session is inserted between the 6th and 7th session.
The course is experiential and its core is mindfulness meditation and following assisted inquiry into experience (“inside-out learning”). Each session consists of basic mindfulness practices guided by the trainer and her subsequent support in deepening the participants’ learning from their experience. The course also contains some evidence-based theory underpinning the overall concept and framework. An integral (and the most important) element of the course is home practice of mindfulness (guided meditations in mp3 format) of 20 to 30 minutes that the participants are asked to do on six out of seven days between the sessions. The learning process is also supported by structured journaling of experiences and personal insights. All activities are entirely voluntary and it is up to each participant what they are willing to share.
